The Pros wanted to share some information on the first ever, negative edge portable hot tub. The video below shows the view from the front of this spa running at night. It has quite a futuristic look and the front edge waterfall makes for a very, very nice look.
While we Pros love the look and style of this new hot tub, being hot tub cover pros, we have some questions about the operational cost for this spa.
First, how can a hot tub cover be manufactured to fit this tub? The Pros see two problem areas, both at the back where the waterfall shoots into the spa, and in the front where the negative edge creates its own water fall.
The insulation provided by a spa cover depends completely on the seal the cover makes with the top acrylic lip of the spa. On this particular spa, there is no way a cover can be manufactured to seal in the heat, compared to spas that have a top acrylic lip that run continuously around the spa. Possibly this spa is intended for warmer climates, but even there, there will be significant heat loss.
Also, how is the pool where the front waterfall falls into maintained? Does it empty completely when the spa is not running, so all the water returns to the main body of water? How is it protected from leaves and debris falling into the catch pool?
Be sure to get answers on these questions when considering a new spa such as this, and conclude if these new special effects are worth their operational costs over the years you would own this spa.

Thank you once again for mentioning one of our products; the patented vanishing edge portable Spa line, the Cascade Series.
This series is not new, in fact our first model was launched 7 years ago. There are now 5 models and one more in the works.
When you say that it is not possible to have a good seal on a cover on this series, you are guessing or assuming. Coast Spas is an ISO 2001-2008 quality certified Manufacture and quality in everything we do is #1.
We meet and exceed the California Energy standards and yes; on these Spas as well. The covers that insures energy efficiency on our vanishing edge Spas are a work of art and so well built! Unfortunatly not inexpensive as you can imagine but come standard with the Spa.
As far as how does this Spa work, how does the vanishing edge operate, where does the water go? That’s not a mystery at all. Go look at one…as our dealers worldwide have many in their showrooms. This was #1 selling Spa line in 2012. Built for extreme cold weather; after all they are manufactured in Canada.
The engineering is the patent!
Your Coast Spas Hot Tubs team.
Hi Don,
I’m a new 2014 Cascade II owner bought from Bob here in Santa Clara, CA….tremendous service and follow up by the way.
My question per above is on cover options in that we’d like to have the cover sit lower in rear and now block such the view, breeze, etc. We have a manual lift. I’m even open to some customization. I’ve seen other designs caddies, gas lifts, etc.
What might you recommend for this unique spa and cover?
Regards,
Dave
