After a long day at the office or wrangling the kids, sometimes you want nothing more than to simply relax. Having a hot tub automatically gives you a leg up in that department, but why stop there? If you want to go all the way and have a real spa experience without the cost, here are some simple things you can do.
First make sure your spa has the right ambiance. Whether inside or outside, some mood lighting can make a huge difference. Try twinkle lights, Tiki torches or red light bulbs. Anything soft, low to the ground, and in a color you find soothing will be better than a simple porch light or bulb. Also consider adding some plants, like potted palms and ferns if your tub is indoors: tropical plants will love the warm moisture. If outside, screen your soaking area in with some planter boxes, shrubs or bamboo (though be careful, as bamboo can be very invasive).
Got the mood? Great. Now add a few more spa-like factors: some soft music, flickering candles and the right beverages. It’s simple to make your own spa drink: you could simply slice some citrus into a glass of water, of course, or have a glass of chilled white wine. But if you’re up for something a little more authentic, try our cucumber-mint water to set the dial to “relax.”
Cucumber-Mint Water
1 cucumber, peeled and sliced into very thin rounds
1 stem of mint leaves, about 8 large
A gallon of water
Mix all ingredients in a container large enough to hold them all and let sit in the fridge for 2-3 hours. You may let it sit overnight if you wish, but any longer will make the cucumber slices slimy and impart a bitter flavor to the water. When ready to enjoy, strain it or let chunks of cucumber and mint settle to the bottom of individual glasses for a pretty green effect.
Lastly, make sure to enjoy yourself! The most important element of a spa is someone who is ready to unwind, so make sure you’re that person and you’re bound to have a wonderful home spa experience.
