Hello from The Pros!
As we all should be aware, pregnancy and hot tubs can be a dangerous combination.
Raising your body core temperature to 102 F, which is possible after only 10 minutes, can cause hyperthermia, the opposite of hypothermia or low body core temperature.
Studies show an increased risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects – which are abnormalities of the spine or brain — for women who are exposed to high temperature ranges during their pregnancy’s first four to six weeks. Hyperthermia occurring during any phase of a pregnancy can also cause the mother to overheat and will drop the mother’s blood pressure. This can reduce the oxygen that is supplied to the baby.
Keep the following points in mind if you are going to hot tub at any time during your pregnancy:
- Avoid sitting near the inlet that provides newly heated water.
- Reduce the water temperature to the low 90s, instead of over 100F.
- Get out immediately should you begin to feel overheated, start to sweat or feel any discomfort.
- Limit your time in the tub to less than 10 minutes.
- Do not enter any public hot tub or spa due to risk of bacterial infection.
- Stay out of the hot tub if you are not in good health or are having any complications due to your pregnancy.
Happy Tubbing!
