Add Cold Weather Barbecuing to Your Hot Tub Lifestyle

You want to know the best thing about a hot tub? You’re never cold when you’re in one!

Seriously, if a snowy alpine landscape can happily accommodate a party around a hot tub, there’s no reason for you to give up backyard fetes simply because the weather changes. When a cold front moves in, simply move right along with it: Move your barbecue, that is.

Winter BBQOne of the best parties for cold weather is an outdoor celebration that combines steamy tub fun with classic summer-weather foods. Grilling is no problem when your barbecue is right next to your hot tub, drinks are within easy reach, and you provide thick towels to keep the warmth going once guests get back on land.

Whether you want a daytime get-together that simulates a pool party, or would rather kick things up a notch by waiting for nightfall, hang a few lanterns for visual interest and place a few potted plants around the tub. (Make sure to put your hot tub cover somewhere safe and out of danger from the barbecue.)

Let us not forget the food, of course. Nothing says “warm” like baby-back ribs with potato salad and pickles. Simply pick up the sides from the deli of your nearest grocery store and bring them on home. Now for the coup de grace: the ribs.

Mix up this easy spice rub: 2 tablespoons each of brown sugar, ground cumin, paprika, black pepper and coarse sea salt. Then rub it all over two good-sized racks of ribs, put them in a container cut into pieces, pour a bottle of beer over the top, and allow them to rest in the fridge overnight.

Now comes the fun part. With guest oohing and aahing, unveil the meat and place it on the grill. Cook covered with medium heat for an hour and a half, turning frequently and lowering the grill if the ribs look like they’re burning. Then baste liberally with barbecue sauce and return them to the grill for another hour or so, or until completely tender.

Voila: a cold-weather party that combines food, fun, friends and, of course, your hot tub.

Happy Tubbing!
