Studies show that over half of the hot tubs and spas out there, over 6,700,000 of them, would be found in violation of health ordinances. Studies also found that 11% would require immediate closure.
Would your tub be one of the problems or would it be an example? Stating the obvious, hot tub sanitization is so very important because bacteria thrive in a warm water – and dark – environment. The Pros offer a few simple tips on keeping your hot tub sanitized.
Weekly: Test hot tub water sanitizer levels EVERY WEEK and even more if your hot tub is having heavy use. Use hot tub test strips as shown in this video, to test and know what needs to be done to adjust the chemical levels of the water. Add sanitizers and/or other chemicals as indicated by the test results.

Monthly: The spa filter cartridge should be inspected and cleaned on a monthly basis to start. After a few months, you can adjust your schedule as you begin to know what a clean filter looks like and how much your filter accumulates over the 30 days. The Pros do recommend using a hot tub filter cleaner solution for the best results. It will improve hot tub filter life and increase its efficiency as the solution is designed to help where mechanical scrubbing or spraying just can’t reach.
Bi-Monthly: The Pros recommend draining and wiping down the entire hot tub once every other month to keep it clean and free debris that clings to the acrylic that the water can not remove.Clean the hot tub shell both at the waterline and below the waterline when the hot tub is drained.
Happy Tubbing!
